For Educators - Learning Activities
Training and Education Exploration
Curriculum Connection: Careers, Technology
Background
This activity is a good vehicle to help students explore different post-secondary educational and training options, using examples from the automotive repair and service sector. Apprenticeship, college and university are all included. Some occupations need only high school, but most require further learning and education
Student Learning Outcomes
- Exploring a field of work
- Exploring educational and training options
- Researching using different sources of information
Materials Needed
- Resources that your students can use to investigate post-secondary education and training options. Work with a guidance counsellor to select appropriate print, Internet or computer-based resources.
- Multiple copies of the CARS Reference Guide or access to the electronic For Youth section (CD-ROM or web site).
- What to Ask section of the For Youth section.
Time Needed
- 50-60 minutes (longer if you are using computers)
Suggested Procedure
- Have students select two occupations from the CARS For Youth section that they will use for their investigation. One of these should be a skilled trade and the other a non-technical occupation that requires post-secondary education. They will be able to tell from the profile what general education/training requirements are needed to get into that occupation.
- The students' task will be to find out and write down, for both occupations:
- where they could get the training needed to qualify for that occupation (what institutions offer the education/training in your province/territory);
- what they would learn (topics and courses);
- how they would learn it (in class or on the job or both); and
- how long it would take to get the education/training.
- Have students describe in a comparative chart the advantages and disadvantages of each kind of training.
