For Educators - Learning Activities

Design and Communications Project

Curriculum Connection: Communications Technology, Art

Background

This is designed to be an assessment activity after students have studied and practiced making posters and other graphic designs. The case study presents a real-life business opportunity for a commercial artist/graphic designer.

Student Learning Outcomes

The specific graphic design skills you want to assess as well as:

  • Apply the principles of poster design to a practical situation
  • Simulate a real work situation
  • Explore a field of work
  • Apply school learning to the world of work

Materials Needed

  • An assignment sheet based on the case study given below.
  • Multiple copies of the CARS Reference Guide or access to the electronic For Youth section (CD-ROM or web site).

Time Needed

  • 50 - 150 minutes
  • This will depend upon the complexity of the assignment and the amount of class time you are willing to devote to it.

Suggested Procedure

  • Explain to students the nature of the assignment and answer any questions.
    • Assignment: You are working as a graphic designer. You have received a contract from the Canadian Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) Council. They want you to create a poster that will attract young people to work in this field. The industry employs a large number of people in many different occupations. Your job is to create the poster.
  • Use the CARS For Youth section and Industry Organizational Chart to learn about the different kinds of work that are done and the different kinds of people in the field (male, female, different ethnic and cultural groups). Your poster must include this variety in some way.

Optional

  • You could add a written or oral presentation component to the assignment if you want students to explain why they did what they did with their design work.
  • You could make this a contest, with the class members being the judges, using a set of criteria of your choosing. Display your winning entries on the CARS website by sending them to careers@carscouncil.ca
