For Educators - Curriculum Connection

The Curriculum Connection

Curriculum varies considerably across Canada, from province to province to territory. For this reason, it is difficult to relate activities to specific learning outcomes or expectations for each jurisdiction. Common learning outcomes have, however, been identified for each activity.

Career-related skills are promoted widely by ministries of education, both in general curriculum objectives and in specific subject curricula. In some jurisdictions, all subjects are expected to include a career component of some kind. Relevant skills include the following:

  • Understanding the application of learning to their future lives;
  • Understanding the application of their learning to workplace situations,
  • Exploring occupational possibilities that are related to school subjects;
  • Relating personal attributes to career possibilities;
  • Exploring education and training options related to these career possibilities; and
  • Understanding job market trends and the realities of the workplace.
