For Educators

Introduction

The For Educators section has been created as part of a suite of career awareness resources developed by the Canadian Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) Council. The resources have been designed to assist students in grades 8 and 9 with career awareness and exploration. The section is intended to help teachers and counsellors make effective use of the CARS resources.

Note: Educators and Industry are welcome to photocopy resource information for classroom and/or presentation use.

The print version of the Educator's Guide will provide you with more detailed information on each of the suggested classroom activities!

Benefits to teachers and counsellors

The CARS career awareness resources have been designed to help teachers and counsellors deliver curriculum. These resources provide up-to-date information and interesting profiles of real people that can enliven course content and support career programs by:

  • Relating school work to the workplace, satisfying the career component that is mandated in many courses and demonstrating the relevance of in-school learning;
  • Supporting career units and activities such as Take Your Kids to Work;
  • Providing case studies that can be used in many subject areas to illustrate topics and as the basis of assessment activities; and
  • Fostering development of important skills.

Benefits to students

Relevance is always an issue with students. The student resources, combined with activity suggestions, will help students to see some of the practical applications of their schoolwork and will help to answer the perennial question, "Why are we doing this?" They will:

  • See real people doing real work, using skills learned in school;
  • Learn how to find information about fields of work and specific occupations;
  • Apply their subject knowledge, using case studies from the workplace; and
  • Develop important skills.

Note: Employers and employees in the automotive repair and service industry emphasize that their field of work has changed a great deal as technology has advanced. It is important for your students to know that the best jobs will go to people who have done well in school and have developed sophisticated skills.
